Vaelkin (Fae)

Vaelkin: The Oath-Forged Fae

“We do not forget. We do not break. We are the promise.”

Overview

The Vaelkin are a primordial race of celestial fae, beings born not merely of nature or whimsy, but of divine order and sacred promise. Where other fae shimmer with chaos or mirth, the Vaelkin stand apart—beings of radiant presence, shaped by the oldest covenants and bound by the Law of Vows.

They are the ancient architects of balance between realms, emissaries between gods and mortals, and the keepers of unbreakable pacts. To speak an oath in the presence of a Vaelkin is to bind the soul. To break it is to tear something fundamental from the world.

Their mortal descendants are known as the Veyari—beings who carry diluted but potent echoes of their forebears’ light and law.

Physical Traits

  • Eyes: Always luminous, often without visible pupils—shining gold, silver, violet, or star-white.
  • Skin: Flawless, radiant, sometimes subtly glowing or patterned with celestial script.
  • Hair: Ethereal hues—silver, opal, starlight blue, or firegold. Moves gently as if stirred by cosmic wind.
  • Voice: Harmonious and resonant. Their words often carry literal weight.

Many mortals cannot look upon an unveiled Vaelkin form for long without awe or weeping.

Society & Order

Vaelkin society is not a court—it is a choir of contracts, a network of sacred roles. Each Vaelkin is born with a purpose and bound to fulfill it. Their homes are crystalline spires, celestial groves, or luminous temples hidden between realms.

  • Every action has consequence. Every word, weight.
  • They do not lie. They cannot—not in the presence of a bound pact.
  • They are not emotionless. But their feelings are filtered through a deep, divine responsibility.

Vaelkin view freedom not as license, but as perfect agency within sacred truth.

Powers & Gifts

  • Oathbinding – Can bless or bind oaths into unbreakable contracts, enforcing magical consequences.
  • Radiant Presence – Emits a natural aura of calm, authority, or reverence.
  • Truthsight – Detect lies, false promises, or spiritual imbalance.
  • Lawweaving – Shape local reality to enforce fairness, clarity, or lawful action.
  • Aetherwalk – Travel between planes or sacred sites by speaking true names.

Some Vaelkin are said to be able to rewrite fate itself—but only within the confines of an unbroken vow.

Role in the World

  • Celestial Mediators: They once served as go-betweens for dragons, gods, and mortal rulers.
  • Covenant Keepers: Their word was the backbone of ancient treaties, divine contracts, and realm-bridging pacts.
  • Judges of the Sacred: In lost ages, they presided over trials where even kings bowed.

The shattering of several Great Oaths led to the decline of the Vaelkin’s presence in the mortal world—many returned to higher realms or became dormant. Some remain, watching, waiting for new covenants to restore balance.

Relationships

  • Mortals: Often mischaracterized as “angels” or “law-fae.” Feared, respected, or mythologized.
  • Veyari: Their mortal-blooded descendants, often tasked with interpreting or preserving sacred duties.
  • Dragons & Seers: Long allied, especially during the age of ancient accords. Trusted as lawful intermediaries.
  • Noctari: Deep enemies. The Noctari are oathbreakers by nature. To Vaelkin, they are the embodiment of betrayal.

Notable Lore

  • The Shining Accord, forged by Vaelkin hands, once kept peace between dragonkind and mortals.
  • A fallen Vaelkin known as Selian the Severed broke an oath and became the first exile—his name is now a curse.
  • Some say the Emberhand of Ironspire is secretly advised by a sleeping Vaelkin bound within a holy blade.

Legacy

The Vaelkin are not gods. They are not angels. They are the echoes of sacred trust—the will of a promise made real.

They will return when the world remembers what it means to keep its word.
