Overview

The Black Veil is not a guild. It’s an invitation. A whisper behind a fan. A coin passed palm to palm. It is velvet curtains and poisoned tongues, a silk handkerchief masking a dagger.

Operating behind the veneer of luxury and legality, the Black Veil controls a silent empire of forgery, espionage, identity theft, and social manipulation. Their reach extends from brothels and parlors to courts and counting houses—without ever making a sound.

They do not steal your coin. They steal your name.

Headquarters

The Silksliver Den, Veilmarket Quarter – A sprawling underground warren masked by a lavish teahouse, tailor’s shop, and exotic goods boutique. Guests believe they are entering a place of indulgence. What they don’t know is that the mirrors have ears and the hosts already know their secrets.

Within the Den:

  • A forgery lab hidden in the tailor’s backroom

  • Secret passageways to the black market and dockside smuggling tunnels

  • A private auction hall where secrets are sold

  • The Velvet Room—used for delicate interrogations and luxurious extortion

Identity & Philosophy

The Black Veil operates on a single truth: leverage is more powerful than law. Why use a blade when a whisper does more damage?

They traffic in control—not just of information or objects, but of outcomes. Their methods are tailored, refined, and psychological. Seduction, scandal, threats, rumors, altered wills, falsified documents, and devastating truths are all part of their toolbox.

They are not chaos. They are precision in a corset or a tux.

Roleplay Hooks

  • Become a master forger or identity fabricator

  • Run blackmail rings targeting nobles or rival guilds

  • Steal back someone’s name, inheritance, or face

  • Interrogate through flirtation and illusion

  • Spy for pay or for revenge

  • Secretly work for both the Veil and the Court… or against both

  • Enforce silence contracts through magical bindings

Power Tier

Moderate (but with incredible reach)

  • Combat Reach: Low

  • Social Influence: High

  • Political Leverage: Hidden but real

  • Economic Control: Indirect, but potent

The Black Veil isn’t an army. They are how armies fall before war even begins. Their power lies in leverage, anonymity, and secrets that make even the boldest rulers hesitate.

Rivalries & Tensions

  • The Veilwrights – rival operatives in espionage and shadowplay

  • The Coinclave – money trails are harder to forge

  • The Hollow Troupe – unpredictable public performers threaten to expose buried truths

The Veil rarely wages war. They sabotage, seduce, or vanish rivals until the problem solves itself.

Leadership

“Madame Sable” (real name unknown) – A creature of elegance and menace, she never appears the same way twice. Some say she is a former noble, others a failed actress, others still a shadow spirit in human guise. All agree she sees through you.

She communicates through scented letters, velvet-gloved emissaries, or masks that speak in her voice. No one ever meets Madame Sable unless she wants them to—and few walk away unchanged.

Known Practices & Traditions

  • Veilbinding – magically enforced contracts of silence or secrecy

  • The Masked Soirée – annual gathering where members trade secrets, not names

  • The Gilded Script – a collection of forged documents so perfect they’re framed like art

  • “Silencing” – the nonviolent removal of dangerous leaks, usually through coercion, scandal, or identity erasure

  • Debt Weaving – a practice of connecting social favors and bribes like a ledger web

Membership & Structure

Common Roles:

  • Silks (face-to-face operatives and charmers)

  • Stitches (forgers, scribes, magical mimicry artists)

  • Locks (security bypassers, locksmiths, safecrackers)

  • Whispers (blackmailers and rumor-mongers)

  • Veils (field operatives with specialized targets)

  • The Hidden Hand (an elite circle answering only to Sable)

Symbols & Style:

  • Black lace, silk veils, and half-masks are common

  • Their emblem is a stylized mirror with no reflection, surrounded by vines

  • They favor daggers and enchanted lockpicks over loud weapons

  • “The real Madame Sable died decades ago. She’s just a role now. A title.”
